Erik specializes in obtaining and protecting patents in the fields of physics, electronics and ICT, both in proceedings before the European Patent Office and in court, including the Unified Patent Court.

His technical expertise includes algorithms, computer and chip technology, integrated optics, semiconductor technology, video coding, cryptography, artificial intelligence, quantum computing and quantum communication.

Erik is mentioned by JUVE as one of the experts in the Netherlands in the field of AI and quantum technology and advises and guides a large number of European start-ups and scale-ups that have raised between 20-100 M in funding.

Erik studied Physics at Delft University of Technology and obtained his PhD in the field of quantum computing. He also studied Dutch Law at Leiden University (cum laude). Erik has been working at De Vries & Metman since 2007. Before that, he worked as a patent examiner in semiconductor technology at the European Patent Office and as a lawyer at a leading international law firm.

Erik is a partner at De Vries & Metman, teaches patent law at Delft University of Technology, is a member of the legal committee of the Dutch Institute of Patent Attorneys and is chairman of the IP & Trade working group of the European Quantum Industry Consortium (QuiC).
